Improved Auto Arrange

Auto arrange current ignores where table placement puts connecting lines. It would be great if auto arrange was connector line aware. In other words, arrange to tables so that connector lines do not route underneath another table and overlap as little as possible.

Thanks for your consideration.

Steven

Hi Steven,

Thank you for your suggestion.

The improvement of the auto-arrange feature is already on our backlog. We will let you know if we have any updates related to this feature.

Cheers.

Hi,

We’ve rolled out a new version of auto-arrange that’s much more aware of the table’s relationships.

Please give it a try and let us know what you think!

I have tried all 3 of the options for auto arrange. I did notice that having TableGroups negates most of the auto arrange. So I removed the TableGroups for testing. All three algorithms had the same issue from my perspective. The relationship lines where hard to follow as they went under other tables instead of around them. I would say Compact was the worst of the three if just because of how the tables were arranged. My model has 50+ tables so Compact is likely not ideal, but tried it anyway. For Left-right the tables could have been spaced a little further apart to allow more room for the relationship lines. Also, many tables where in a single column where they could have been spread out a little more. Snowflake was the best of the 3 but still tables were a little close together and lines ran under tables instead of around.

Hi @steven.perry ,

You’ve highlighted some clear issues with the relationship line routing and table spacing, especially for larger diagrams. I’ve logged your insights for future improvement to the layout logic.

Thanks for thoroughly testing all the auto-arrange modes!
